Raw papaya ki sabji

Having an abundance of papaya trees in our kudankulam house, near kanyakumari is truly a blessing, especially we enjoyed as fruits and raw papaya in culinary forms in our kitchen. It staple in various Indian kitchens including ours, especially in regions where it is grown abundantly. One of the today’s recipe, what i enjoyed to cook called “Kachche Papita Ki Sabji.

Cooking raw papaya vegetables once a week had cherished me, transforming this green papaya into delicious and nutritious dishes. Raw papaya is incredibly versatile and blends beautifully with a variety of spices.

It was allowing me to creating new dishes with basic ingredients raw papaya in the kitchen. Whether it’s as Papaya Stir-Fry, Kofta CurryPapaya Halwa, Papaya in Poppy Gravy, Papaya with Peanut, Papaya Laddu, Papaya Raita or a tangy salad, the unique texture and flavour of raw papaya makes each dish a delight. This weekly ritual not only brings a burst of freshness in our meals but also ensures that our family reap the numerous health benefits that raw papaya has to offer.

This sabji is easy to prepare and can be served hot with Poori, Chapati., Paratha, or as a side dish with Rice.

Ingredients:

  • Raw papaya: medium size (~ 400 gm)
  • Aaloo (potato): 1no. (Medium size)
  • Onion: 1no. (Medium size)
  • Tomato: 1no. (Medium size)
  • Green chili: 2 no.
  • Coriander powder: 1teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic flakes: 2-3 no.
  • Ginger: 1 inch pieces
  • Black pepper: 10-15 no.
  • Mustard oil/cooking oil: 2 table spoon
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon (as per taste)
  • Cumin seed: half teaspoon
  • Garam masala powder: half teaspoon

Preparation:

  1. Peel off papaya, discard the seeds and chop into small cubes.
  2. Cut onion and tomatoes into small pieces.
  3. Cut green chilli, ginger and garlic into small pieces.

Method:

  1. Take a pressure cooker. Put papaya, aaloo (potato) salt, turmeric, chilli, coriander powder, black pepper, with small amount of water, mix well, close the cooker, cook on high flame.
  2. Bring to full cooking pressure, reduce to low flame and cook for 1 minute, allow cooker to cool and open.
  3. Take fry pan, put oil and heat, when it smokes add cumin seeds, sputter for few seconds.
  4. Add onion, garlic, green chilli and ginger; stir fry  on high flame for couple of minutes (keep it stirring otherwise it may burn).
  5. Add tomato; continue to fry until liquid of tomatoes dried up.
  6. Add boiled vegetables. continue cooking until you get consistency of your choice.
  7. Add Garam masala powder, put off the flame.
  8. Add chopped coriander leaves.
  9. Raw papaya ki sabji is ready to serve.
