My son is a great fan of “Solkadhi”. Today, Solkadhi is loved not only in coastal homes but also across India as a healthy and refreshing traditional drink.

Whenever we visited Maharashtrian restaurant for a traditional Maharashtrian Thali, he would often order an extra glass of Solkadhi because he loved its refreshing taste so much.

Watching his fondness for this delicious coastal drink made me very curious and eager to learn the recipe myself.

Finally, one of my friend taught me how to prepare authentic Solkadhi at home. I carefully followed the method in my kitchen and to my delight, the Solkadhi turned out exactly like the one we enjoyed in the restaurant, with the same creamy texture, beautiful pink colour, and delicious tangy flavour.

Solkadhi is also considered a natural probiotic drink because it is often prepared using slightly fermented kokum and fresh coconut milk, which support healthy digestion and gut health.

In coastal regions, people traditionally enjoy Solkadhi after meals as it cools the body, improves digestion and refreshes the stomach, especially during hot summer days.

Its light, soothing and digestive properties make it not only delicious but also beneficial for overall wellness.

Solkadhi is a traditional coastal drink from the Konkan region of India, especially popular in Maharashtra, Goa and parts of Karnataka.

It has deep roots in Malvani and Konkani cuisine.

In my version I added just a small piece of beet root for beautiful pink colour, kokum (Garcinia indica) and fresh coconut milk, all ingredients easily available in western coastal belt of India.

Historically, Solkadhi was served after meals because it was believed to aid digestion and cool the body in the hot and humid coastal climate.

In many Konkani houses traditionally Solkadhi is served chilled alongside rice, fish curry or spicy coastal dishes.

Apart from its delicious taste, it is also valued for its cooling and digestive properties. Kokum is known in Ayurveda for helping digestion and reducing body heat, while coconut milk adds richness and nutrition.
