Shalzam (turnip) ki sabji

I am great believer of the fact that one should consume seasonal produce, which gives us most nutritional benefits. This is the season of turnip, market flooded with very fresh turnip (Shalazam) with turnip green leaves; here I bring for you a turnip recipe in which I added potato, adding potato is totally optional.

The things to be noted is that the turnip has high level of vitamin ’K’ and calcium, helps to strengthen the bones and many more benefits. It is good source of phosphorus and Omega 3 fatty acid too.

Ingredients:

Preparation:

  1. Peel off  Shalzam and potato, cut into 2 inch pieces. Keep aside.
  2. Grind onion and tomato to fine paste, keep aside.
  3. Chop coriander leaves, keep aside.
  4. Grind poppy seed and make fine paste. (First grind dry poppy seed, then add little amount of water slowly and make paste.)

Method:

  1. Take a fry pan. Heat oil on high flame until smoke starts coming; add cumin seed, Sputter it for few seconds, add onion and tomato paste saute  on medium flame until light brown, add garlic and ginger paste. Stir it.
  2. Add chilli powder, turmeric powder and coriander powder, reduce to low heat, and add poppy seed paste.
  3.  continue to fry till oil separates from masala or liquid dries up(about couple of minutes); add Shalzam and potato, stir fry  on medium flame with lid on. Stir occasionally, so that it should not burn, fry until it is half done, (About 5-7 minutes), add salt and put half cup of water.
  4. Cook it on medium to lower flame till it become soft(about 3-4 minutes), add Garam masala powder and stir it.
  5. Put off the flame, garnish with coriander leaves. Serve hot with Rice or Roti.
