Winter has begun to make its presence, felt in Mumbai too, and with it comes the seasonal bouts of cough and cold that many people are struggling with.

To bring some nourishment and natural protection, I prepared a wholesome Gooseberry and Date Halwa today. Rich in Vitamin C from fresh gooseberries and packed with the natural sweetness and energy of dates, this halwa offers a comforting boost to the immune system. Warm, soothing, and deeply flavourful, it is a perfect winter treat that supports health while satisfying the palate.

I enhanced the Gooseberry and Date Halwa with the warm aroma of green cardamom and a gentle hint of nutmeg, which lifted the entire flavour profile beautifully.

The natural tartness of gooseberry blended with the sweetness of dates, while the spices added a cosy winter-friendly depth to every spoonful. These additions not only made the halwa more aromatic but also enriched its soothing quality, making it a perfect homemade remedy and a delightful treat during the chilly season.

Ingredients:

  • Amla (Gooseberry): 200 gm.
  • Date: 150 gm.
  • Gud (Jaggery: 150 gm.
  • Ghee (Clarified Butter): 1 tablespoon
  • Almond: 10-12 no.
  • Nutmeg powder : 2 pinch

Preparation:

  1. Wash and clean Amla and date properly; boil both ingredients with 1/2 cup of water in cooker or rice cooker, let it cool.
  2. Remove the seeds; grind to make paste. Keep aside.
  3. Crush almond, keep aside.

Method:

  1. Take non stick fry pan, put ghee; when ghee becomes hot, add prepared paste.
  2. Stir it continuously on medium flame; fry for 4-5 minutes or until ghee separates from paste and changes the colour to golden.
  3. Add jaggery; reduce the flame to low, cook until gud dissolves (stir occasionally).
  4. Add almonds; cook till halwa consistency comes (about 3-4 minutes).
  5. Put off the flame; grate nutmeg, mix well.
  6. “Gooseberry and Date Halwa” ready for use. It can be used for a week at normal room temperature.
