I first learned and tasted “Sweet Potato Rice” during my stay in Japan, where one of my Japanese friend lovingly prepared it for us. It was a simple yet delightful dish.

I noticed how much the Japanese children enjoyed it with great enthusiasm. The natural sweetness of the sweet potatoes blended beautifully with the soft rice, creating a comforting and unique flavour.

I too enjoyed it very much, and since then, it has remained a special memory of my time in Japan.

Sweet Potato Rice is a comforting and wholesome dish that beautifully blends the natural sweetness of sweet potatoes. It is a perfect one-pot meal that is not only delicious but also nourishing, making it ideal for everyday cooking.

The delicate flavour of black sesame seeds adds a rich, nutty aroma to this dish, making it even more special and comforting.

Combined with soft, fluffy rice and naturally sweet, tender sweet potatoes, it creates a delicious and well-balanced recipe. The mild sweetness and light texture make it very pleasing to the taste buds, while being easy to digest too.

It is a wholesome and satisfying dish that can be enjoyed by both children and adults alike.

In my version of this dish, I used Maharashtra’s special Indrayani rice (like Japanese rice), which adds a soft, aromatic, and slightly sticky texture, making the dish even more comforting.

To enhance the flavour, I added a touch of apple cider vinegar and a pinch of salt, which beautifully balance the natural sweetness of the sweet potatoes. This simple combination brings a gentle tang and depth to the dish, making it both unique and delicious, while still keeping it light and easy to digest.

I finished it with roasted black sesame seed sprinkle on the cooked rice and also decorated the serving bowl.
