It is sweet dumpling what we Indian called ‘Modak’ are very popular in all over India. In Japan; a sweets similar to Modak is known as ‘Kangidan’ introduced in ‘Nara period’.

There are many different ways to cook Modak and much different variety of it, but today’s special is classic or authentic way…the God’s favorite sweet…

Ingredients:

For stuffing:

  • Fresh coconut: 1 no.
  • Khukhus/poppy seed: half cup
  • Sesame seed: half cup
  • Cardamom: 12 no.
  • Jaggery: ¾ cup

For outer layer:

  • Rice flour: 2 cup
  • Salt: ¼ teaspoon
  • Oil: 1 tablespoon
  • Water: 2 cup

Preparation:

  1. Peel off cardamom, grind it to make powder. Keep it in a mixing bowl.
  2. Grate Jaggery; put it into the mixing bowl.
  3. Scrap coconut through coconut scraper /grater; dry roast coconut till it gets light brown in color, put it into the mixing bowl
  4. Dry roast Sesame seed till it gets puff off, put it into the mixing bowl.
  5. Dry roast Khukhus too, put it into the mixing bowl. Mix them well. Keep aside.
  6. Stuffing is ready.

Method:

  1. Take mixing bowl; put salt oil and rice four, mix well properly by rubbing with your palm.
  2. Make soft dough with the help of boiling water; you can make dough in food processor; keep aside for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Again knead with help of oil and drop of water.
  4. Make the lemon size ball with dough; grease your palm with ghee and make a smooth bowl shape, fill 1 teaspoon of stuffing in the dumpling bowl. As shown in photo.
  5. Fold carefully and close it, give the shape of modak.
  6. Your raw modak is ready.
  7. Steam this modak for about 7-10 minutes in idly stand or cooker.
  8. Now modak is ready to offer to Lord Ganpati Bappa.
