Besani (Gram Flour) Aloe Vera(Gwarpatha/Gritkumari) with Pumpkin Seed

Since olden days people knew about  significance of Aloe Vera, but now a days through media the awareness is increased, lot many people are aware about the benefits of this medicinal plant.

They plant it in their pots or in kitchen garden. We too prepared a aloe vera bed and grew this plant when we had been in Kudankulam near Kanyakumari. We almost used it as a staple food consuming daily in good quantity. We used it directly on our skin to moisturise, also as hair mask and took juice, mixed with goose berry and beetroot.

The result was incredible on skin and hair; vitamins of Aloe Vera promote healthy hair by strengthening hair cells adding moisture and slowing down hair loss…

The versatile property of aloe vera fascinate me to prepare and use it in different  ways; today’s  recipe is the result…

Ingredients:

  • Aloe Vera (Gwarpatha/Gritkumari): 1 leaf (Medium  size)
  • Pumpkin Seed: 2-3 tablespoon
  • Mustard oil/cooking oil: 2-3 tablespoon
  • Cumin: 1/4 teaspoon
  • Besan: 2 tablespoon
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder: half teaspoon
  • Chilli powder: 1/2 teaspoon(as per taste)
  • Coriander powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin powder: half teaspoon
  • Asafoetida powder: 1 pinch
  • Garam masala powder: half teaspoon
  • Coriander leaves: 1 tablespoon(chopped)

Preparation:

Method to separate Aloe Vera pulp:

  1. Cut Aloe Vera leaf into 4-5 inch long pieces; Leave it for 5-10 minutes, the bitter yellow liquid will come out.
  2. Discard thin layer from both end having yellow liquid, cut longitudinally into 2-3 pieces. See as photos given here.
  3. Peel off skin the aloe Vera as per photo.
  4. Chop it into cube. Keep aside.

Method:

  1. Heat oil in a wok (Kadhai) when it starts to smoke; add cumin, sputter for few seconds, add besan and asafoetida, keep stirring on low flame for couple of minutes, add pumpkin seed, continue to fry for a minute or Besan become light brown in colour.
  2. Add salt, turmeric, chilli, coriander, and cumin powder, stir a bit, add chopped aloe vera, continue to stir for a minute.
  3. Cook on lower flame for 4-5 minutes with lid on (stir occasionally) or till done. Add Garam masala powder. Stir well. Adding more flavour to the recipe sprinkle green coriander leaves.
  4. “Besani (Gram Flour) Aloe Vera(Gwarpatha/Gritkumari) with Pumpkin Seed” is ready to be served with Rice-dal and roti as side dish.
