“Chatela/Spiny/Spine Gourd(Momordica dioica)” green vegetable commonly available in monsoon. The seasonal crop mostly grown in Indian states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, West Bengal and north eastern parts of India. It is easily available in Mumbai, so what I am posting today is especially bring out from Maharashtrian kitchen. In Marathi the veggie is called ‘Kantola’ and in Hindi Kakoda.
It has many health benefits…as improves immunity of the body as well as digestive system even seasonal cough and cold too, excellent source of vitamins and minerals.

Serve these sabji hot or warm as a side dish with “Dal–Chawal” or ‘ Kadhi–Chawal” with your every day meal.
Note:
I would like to advise you to buy tender kantola if possible as it cooks faster turn softer and taste a bit better than mature one.
Ingredients:
- Chatela/Spiny/Spine Gourd(Momordica dioica): 250 gm.
- Onion: 1 no. (Medium)
- Tomato: 1 no. (Medium)
- Salt: 1 teaspoon (As per taste)
- Turmeric powder: 2 pinch
- Cumin: 1/2 teaspoon
- Red chilli powder: 1/2 teaspoon
- Coriander powder: 1 teaspoon
- Garam masala powder: 1/2 teaspoon
- Mustard oil: 50 gm.
Preparation:
- Slice onion and tomato, keep aside.
- Slice Chatela keep aside.
Method:
- Take wok (fry pan), heat 2 tablespoon of oil ; let oil start to smoke. Add chatela, stir fry till 70-80% done on medium flame(about 8-9 minutes). take out from wok, Keep aside.
- Add remaining oil in the same wok; add mustard seed and cumin, sputter for few seconds, add onion, sauté on high flame for 2-3 minutes or till it gets translucent, add tomato, continue to cook for couple of minutes.
- Add chilli powder, turmeric powder, salt and coriander powder; continue to cook on lower flame for couple of minutes or fry until oil separates from masala (or liquid dries up).
- Add stir fried chatela, continue to cook on medium flame for 3-4 minutes or until it is done. Put off the flame, add Garam masala powder.
- “Chatela/Spiny/Spine Gourd(Momordica dioica) Veggie/Sabji” is ready to be served with meal. Transfer into serving bowl decorates with coriander leaves.
