“Ragi (finger millet) upma” is a wholesome and nutritious South Indian breakfast dish made from ragi flour or finger millet semolina. Rich in calcium, iron, and dietary fiber, this dish is a perfect start to the day, especially for those seeking a healthy alternative to regular upma. I mean to say that, it is very-very good to include as a part of our food due to lots of protein and essential nutrients.
Cooked with vegetables, mild spices, ragi upma offers a delightful balance of taste and nutrition. Its earthy flavour and soft texture make it a comforting meal that not only satisfies hunger but also nourishes the body.
It has amazing health benefits, people are not much aware about that it’s healthy but how?
This natural wonder, is one of the best source of potassium, phosphorus, minerals and amino acid.

Ingredients:
- Ragi rava: 1 cup
- Water: 2 cup
- Refined oil: 2 tablespoon
- Onion: 1 no. (Small)
- Peas: 1 fist (~ 50 gm)
- Urad dal: 1 teaspoon (optional)
- Chana dal: 2 teaspoon (optional)
- Carrot: 1 no. (Small)
- French beans:3-4 no.
- Dry red chilli: 1 no.
- Curry leaves: 10- 15 no.
- Mustard seed: half teaspoon
- Cashew nuts: 8-10 no.
- Salt: 1 teaspoon
- Sugar: half teaspoon (optional)
- Butter: 2 teaspoon (optional)
Preparation:
- Chop onion, French beans and carrot into small pieces.
- Dry roast Ragi rava till it turns slightly brownish. Keep aside.
Method:
- Take nonstick fry pan, put oil in it.
- Heat the oil, Fry cashew nuts on low flame and take it out. Keep aside.
- Add whole red chilli and mustard seed, sputter for few seconds on medium flame.
- Add carrot, French beans, onion, peas and curry leaves on interval of one minute as they take different time for frying, keep stirring over the medium flame.
- Sauté till All become soft and translucent.
- Fry it for 2-3 minutes; pour water. When water starts boiling add sugar, dry roasted Ragi rava and salt.
- Stir continuously till it gets cooked( about 3-4 minutes).
- After drying water cover and cook on low flame. (About 2-3 minutes)
- Put off the flame; serve after 2-3 minutes.
- Just before serving add butter and transfer into serving bowl.
- Decorate with cashew nut and coriander leaves.
- Healthy breakfast is ready to serve.
- Serve with Green Chutney or Coconut Chutney along with some fruits.
