I first tasted this “Sesame Rice (Tilwale Chawal)” in a Japanese bento box, when I joined the Japanese class in Tokyo, Japan. I instantly loved the taste of sesame mixed with sticky rice. The nutty aroma of sesame combined with the soft, slightly sticky texture of the rice was simple yet very comforting.
That experience stayed with me and inspired me to recreate the same flavours in my own kitchen, giving this dish a special place among my favorite rice recipes. Sesame rice is a flavourful and aromatic dish that highlights the rich, nutty taste of sesame seeds. It is simple to prepare yet very satisfying, making it perfect for everyday meals.
The roasted sesame seeds add depth and warmth of plain rice, while cumin and ghee enhance its taste without overpowering it.
This dish is especially enjoyed during winter and is both nutritious and comforting, pairing well with Curd, Pickle, or a light Curry.
To bring the same effect in my kitchen, I used Maharashtra’s signature rice, Indrayani rice. Its soft texture and gentle aroma are very similar to sticky rice, making it perfect for this recipe.
The Indrayani rice absorbed the sesame flavour beautifully, helping me recreate the comforting taste and feel of the sesame rice I had enjoyed in Japan.
I served the recipe today at our lunch with “Water Chestnut (Kachche Singhara) Curry (Japanese Cuisine)”; taste was awesome.
